In anticipation of her new album ‘MDNA’, Two Tube music critic Conor Behan selects Madonna best tracks.
Madonna released her new single ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’’ on iTunes this week and had many jaws dropped with her sensational performance at the Super Bowl’s Halftime show.
‘Give Me All Your Luvin’’ is an infectious, toe-tapping pop earworm and a reminder of Madonna’s perfect instincts for a killer single. With that in mind it seems fitting to look at five of her best tracks ahead of her 12th album ‘MDNA’ being released next month.
5: Borderline
This early single from 1983 may not be referenced as much as the likes of ‘Holiday’ or ‘Material Girl’ but is a thoroughly underrated R&B tinged number that really reminds you of Madonna’s ability to flat out sell a song. The video plays out like some kind of oddly stylish soap opera too but it’s that solid gold chorus that has stood the test of time. Fantastic.
4: Live To Tell
Madonna is always known for her dancefloor tunes but she knows her way around a devastating ballad just as well. ‘Live To Tell’ is one of her very best. A mysterious, moody number it builds momentum while Madonna’s own vocals show off a lower side to her register. A moving and powerful song.
3: Hung Up
Madonna returned to the pop world in 2005 in brash, exuberant style with this tune. Latching a cheeky Abba sample to a pounding beat, this is Madonna doing shameless dance pop and having fun with it. Spectacular.
2: Vogue
This homage to old Hollywood with it’s referencing of a style of dance best known in underground New York clubs still remains one of Madonna’s most enduring hits. The video too has crossed into iconic territory, a beautifully black and white piece with some impressive moves that still look great today. A classic.
1: Ray of Light
A whirling, frenetic dance track with sharp lyrics and a powerful chorus, this is Madonna doing cool, sleek electronic music but still maintaining a radio friendly air. I’ve placed it here purely because having seen it live it’s always remained my personal favourite of Madonna’s impressive body of work.
Obviously when it comes to Madonna there are many songs to chose from (she’s had over 70 singles!) but this is just a selection. Do share with us your favourites below!
